We often get asked what inspired us to open Burrito Grill in Kimberley, and why this community felt like the right fit. So, I thought we’d start at the beginning — 17 years ago, back in 2009.

We had first visited Kimberley on a ski trip. Like so many others who visit the Kootenays, we fell in love with the mountains, the culture, and the strong sense of community. It didn’t take us long to realize that the idea of going back east, home to Ontario, just didn’t feel right anymore.

This was around the time we started noticing these small, laid-back takeout-and-dining burrito restaurants popping up in the city. Fresh Mexican ingredients, build-your-own options, and we remember thinking, “Wow… this would fit perfectly with Kimberley’s laid-back mountain culture.”
This was long before Chipotle and the big fast-casual Mexican chains were everywhere. In this region, there weren’t many options offering fresh, customizable burritos, bowls, and tacos in a casual setting. We saw an opportunity to bring something new and exciting to a growing community.

The mine had been closed for about 8 years, and the city was still finding its footing. It was known as a beautiful tourist town, but it hadn’t quite become a true destination yet. With the ski hill, golf courses, easy airport access, and the mountain views, how could it not grow into something special?

We believed Kimberley was a little gem just waiting to dust off a bit of the old coal dust, and we have truly enjoyed watching it grow and shine as a vibrant resort town! We will always be proud to be a part of this vibrant and thriving little community, and thank our local community for their continued support!
